Default What is the meaning of the word Aptera?

I listened to a episode of the EVcast today and when Aptera came up and the meaning of the word they seem to know what it meant and stick with that. I know it's already discussed on the forum but I just want to have this poll for the record.

What it means in Greek. I know what Aptera motors says it means, but I would like to make an end to the misinformation on the meaning of the word Aptera. I hope this poll can do that.

The guys over at EV cast called Marques about the meaning of the word Aptera! Because of an email I sent to evcast with a link to this poll! Get the answer here! At around 25 minutes in: http://www.evcast.com/members/evcast....html#00000300

They did not ask any other things but that was part of the condition for getting them on the phone.

I think you got it all wrong!

The meaning of Aptera is wingless insects. Specifically an order of insects without wings.
-'ptera' means insect such as Lepido-ptera (butterflies and moths), ortho-ptera (mantids, crickets and roaches), Coleo-ptera (beetles), A-ptera (wingless insects)

So it has nothing to do with birds at all.

So it means "insects without wings"

But does this mean A- in Greek means Wingless? (Or "Without Wings")

According to this source Ptera means 'Wing" And Aptera "Without Wing"

This makes sense because neoptera is a classification group that includes almost all the winged insects. The Honeybee for example is in the Hymenoptera Order.

Remember that the context of 'ptera' is the wing types of insects. One way of distinguishing between genera of insects is through their wings. It is correct that Aptera means without wings but within the context of insects. Ptera refers to the type of insect wings.
