It seems back in 1977 they made some vehicles that got 30 miles per gallon and could protect five passengers from a 50 mph crash even without seatbelts. Goes to show that you don't need a tank on wheels to get a safe car. You just have to engineer it correctly.

The reagan administration of course attempted to destroy all evidence of these vehicles.
