View Full Version : Why do I keep getting logged off?

I keep getting logged off in no predictable manner. Sometimes my session will stay logged in for an extended time, and others I will get logged off for no detectable reason. The last time - just a few minutes ago - I had posted a response in a thread using quick post, and tried to edit it to add a thought that came moments after hitting post. I edited and when I tried to save the edit I was no-longer logged in and lost the edit.
My browser of choice for now is: Opera/9.52 (Windows NT 5.2; U; en). Perhaps there is a problem with the browser. I have not tried InternetDestroyer or Mozilla FireFox on this forum yet. I guess that I should do so.
Any known browser compatiblity issues?

Hi J.P.
This happens to me a fair bit of the time, as well. I use Firefox all the time.

I've had this problem before, and the solution seems to be checking the 'remember me' box when you sign in.

I don't believe it has anything to do with your browser or anything on your end, for that matter.... at least not when you go to the site regularly.

At least I am not the only one experiencing this problem. I thought it might be something about cookie handling - may still be.
Thanks;

I wondered what that click button on my screen did. :)

When logging in, with the "Remember Me" checked, a cookie
is created that remembers that you were logged in.
If that cookie is deleted, as Opera running on the Wii seems to do
frequently, you have to log in (not Register) all over again.
Some actions on the forum, like posting (but not viewing),
will re-verify that somebody is logged in. If, for some reason,
it thinks that there is nobody logged in, it will ask for somebody
to log in, and that might be you, again.

The "logged-off" problem is the standard experience for me. I use Firefox exclusively. Any length of time that goes by without a mouse click or a page change results in being logged-off. Keyboard time generating a post apparently does not count as site activity, only page changes and mouse clicks.

I believe your experience is atypical. At least, I don't experience that with this or any other site across many different computers. Maybe you have a setting that does not allow you to save cookies? I also use Firefox almost exclusively.

It may be atypical to others, but it's the same for me across three different Win OS computers, 2 with Win2K and one w/Vist(ugh!), and one Mac OS X. All four running FireFox; Cookies gladly accepted everywhere. It would be nice to not have to deal with it, but I have a crude work-around; no worries...

Maybe your cookies are stored but cannot be read?

Garygid,
I looked into the problem only a little because this only happens on the above mentioned four computers when I go to ApteraForum.com; nowhere else. I suppose I could try IE, but my guess is this is a forum related problem, not four separate computers (none on same network) across three operating systems and two hardware platforms.
I say forum related because when I log out using the logout button on the upper tool bar, I get a message that says there was an error when I logged out. The page I'm sent to is ready to send me to the control panel, and then feed me another error message. If I log out using the "logout NmGfan" at the bottom of the topic page, that's it, I'm logged out. :happy0025:

I think all your computers have one thing in common, the version of Firefox that you use?
If you are logged in properly with "Remember Me" checked, and then logout
(from the top or the bottom logout), and the logout completes properly,
you should get an "All Cookies Cleared" message after the logout.
If you do not get this, then it would appear that your browser
(or how it is configured) is not allowing the expected access to your Cookies.
Or, the access method used by the forum (to the cookies) is not enabled
or supported by Firefox, or is not allowed by your configuration of Firefox.
Or, it could be something like Zone Alarm, or some other
"protection" software that is limiting the access to the cookies.

I usually use IE on many computers, and at least 6 OSs,
and I rarely log out, unless I am on a "public" computer.
I "(almost) never" need to log in unexpectedly, except on the Wii Internet,
where the limited-function Opera browser there sometimes appears
to overwrite (and thus lose) the local cookies.

I am currently running Opera 9.52 browser on Win XP pro 64 OS. I am going to clear all of my Aptera forum cookies shortly to see if recreating all cookies and permissions will have any effect.. Somehow I doubt it... Maybe it will?

There should only be one ApteraForum cookie, I believe.
There are several ways to "read" or ckeck cookies,
I suspect, from different scripts or "languages".
Perhaps Opera does not support one of these.
It would seem that the Cookie is getting created.
Have you tried the MS IE browser?
Does it also fail in the same way?
I have not used a "64" OS.

I checked "remember me" today upon login and did not get logged-off during my whole session. I'll try that on the other computers to see if it is universally better.

Glad you found the "missing link".
If you do not check "Remember Me", it does not create a cookie, I believe.
With the ApteraForum cookie created, if you do logout, it remembers
you to help with the next login on that computer. If you do not logout
then you should be automatically "in" when you next access the forum.

The forum creates several cookies - Four, I think. Anyway.. I finally remeberd to check 'Remember Me' several days ago, and that seems to have fixed the problem. Even stayed logged on through a system restart to install new software (gotta love M$ - change ANYTHING, reboot). Been logged on for several days now. Not sure exactly what the 'Remember Me' does, but it seems to work.
Thanks;
J.P.
